After an incredibly warm and windy Go the Distance Day our class was walking back into the building all together about 2:45. We had had an absolutely wonderful day together and one of my 2nd grade boys turns to me and says and he's rubbing his inner thighs, "Mrs. Hamilton, I got really sunburned down here!" I said, "Oh, honey. You can't get sunburned where the sun doesn't shine." And that's when it hit me. . . he was chafed from sweating, running, etc. I then explained to him in a short version what chafing was and told him to talk to his mom more about it as I knew she was a runner:)
Today at the end of the day when only 3 or 4 kids were in my room doing end of day jobs, over the intercom we heard the announcement for Jodi's Friends to come down to the office. This is a service that is provided for children in our school whose families don't have enough money to buy them food over the weekend. One of the girls in the room said, "What is that? What does Jodi's friends mean?" So I explained in kid terms the program. The other little girl in our room said,"Yeh, and we'd never want to take food from that program if we don't we really need it." I agreed and added that yes, we'd want to have integrity when we use that program. The boy in the room said,"Well, I'd never need to be a Jodi's friend because my mom makes about $100 a month. We have plenty of money to buy food." The innocence in the little boy, thinking that $100 is enough each month to feed his family of 5 is so precious! LMJ!
When talking about avian digestive tracts, we learned from our Story County naturalist that both #1 and #2 come out the same place in birds. That's why it "splatters" on the ground. One student informed us, "Oh, so like girls. Their number 1 and number 2 come out the same place. Boys come out two different places." Our naturalist quickly corrected him and moved on:) Never assume anything...
