Meeting the Challenge
Theme Concepts: Change, Forces, Systems, and Communities
Investigating the Earth’s Treasures
What are the properties of earth materials?
· Earth materials are solid rocks, soils, and liquid water.
· Rock is composed of different combinations of materials.
· Rocks come in many different shapes and sizes; boulders, pebbles, sand.
· Rocks can be sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous.
What is a fossil?
· Some organisms that once lived on earth have become extinct.
What do fossils tell us about Iowa and our earth?
· During the Devonian period Iowa was covered in shallow water.
· Fossils remaining when the water receded in Iowa were; brachiopods, gastropods, crinoids, bryozoans, horn coral, and colony corals.
What are the layers of the earth?
· The layers of the earth are the crust, core, and mantle.
Exploring Electricity and Magnetism
What is magnetism and how do magnets interact?
· Magnetism is the force where objects are attracted or repelled to one another.
What is electricity?
· Electricity is the flow of electrical charge, which transfers energy from place to place.
· Insulators and conductors affect the electric flow.
· Electricity can be static or current.
· Electricity can help us to meet challenges such as electric cars or prosthetic limbs.
Discovering the Brain and the Nervous System
What does the brain and nervous system do?
· We use our nervous system to process and respond to stimuli, such as sound and light waves.
The brain receives information through the five senses.
· In response, the spinal cord and nerves carry messages to all parts of the body.
What do you need to do to keep your brain safe and healthy?
· The choices you make affect the health and safety of your brain.
What are different ways to show intelligence?
· People learn in different ways.
· Everyone has unique talents and abilities.
